Supporting Accessible Digital Learning at UMMC

Instructors at UMMC take pride in delivering high-quality learning experiences that prepare students for success in their future professions. As expectations for accessible digital content continue to grow in higher education, accessibility standards add an important—though sometimes unfamiliar—layer to course content preparation for many faculty members.

UMMC is currently reviewing all digital platforms to ensure they meet the new minimum accessibility standards outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II regulations. During this process, faculty play a vital role in supporting accessibility and ensuring that our learning environments are inclusive for all students.

To assist faculty in understanding accessibility requirements and making necessary updates to course content in Canvas, UMMC offers several helpful tools.

Digital Accessibility 101 Course
Dr. Robin Benson Thompson, Director of the Office for Academic Innovation, has developed a free, self-paced course available in Canvas. This course helps faculty build the skills and confidence needed to create accessible course materials, including documents, videos, and other digital resources.  To self-enroll, click here.

UDoIt Accessibility Checker
UDoIt is another valuable tool available in every Canvas course at UMMC. This built-in accessibility checker scans course content and provides guidance and suggestions for resolving accessibility issues.
